Hip Hop has turned 50 years old and in that time has gone from youthful creative self-expression to a global juggernaut influencing popular culture, education, politics, art, journalism and much more. This presentation by Dr. M. Keith Claybrook, Jr. extends Marvin Gladney’s (1995) argument that understanding and analyzing Hip Hop as an extension of the Black Arts Movement offers historical and cultural context. With a focus on the greater Los Angeles area, this presentation situates Hip Hop in the context of Black Art, offering cultural and political frameworks for understanding the intellectual, artistic and political dimensions of Hip Hop.
